At Craigmore the Community Wildlife Garden project was started in April 2023.
We currently have a polytunnel, six raised beds and various ground level beds including a Dug Bed and a 'No Dig' bed. We have and are growing a variety of produce including cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, white onion, red onion, dwarf French beans, runner beans, broad beans, beetroot, winter squash, garlic, rhubarb, celeriac, tomatoes, cucamelons and cucumber. How successful we will be is another matter but it is all part of the gardening experience! We have also planted heritage apple and pear trees too.
Our ultimate aim is to share the produce that we grow throughout the community and beyond.
As part of the Community garden we also aim to be as friendly to the local wildlife as possible.
We will provide as natural a habitat as possible for the local wildlife e.g. hedgehog hotels, bug hotels etc
We are planning to have a variety of plants that will benefit the local wildlife e.g. teasels for wild birds, buddleia for pollinators, a wild flower area etc.
We also have two live beehives in the garden. These belong to a local beekeeper who kindly looks after and maintains the colonies of bees in the hives.
Eco
We will endeavour, wherever possible, to be as eco friendly and sustainable as we can be by:-
collecting and recycling as much rainwater as possible
recycling as many materials as possible
composting all of our green waste, to produce our own compost.
